I HATE hospitals. I hate emergency rooms even more. And I particularly hate Festivity Health. Not that they didn’t do all they could for me on my previous visit. But their religious affiliations prevented Genesis from seeing me the last time I was here, because, you know, homosexuality is a sin, and she didn’t think fast enough to lie and claim to be a relative.

This time she can’t get in because emergency room policy states only one visitor may be admitted and Tom’s already with me. He offers to trade places with her. I can imagine how worried she is in the waiting room with Alex and Joe, but I don’t plan on hanging around long, and I’m not sure I can take her fretting, so I decline.

Good thing too. Tom remains steady, no matter what the staff have to do to me. The worst moment involves popping my shoulder back into the socket. I think I do black out for a few seconds, and I hope my scream didn’t carry all the way to the waiting area and Genesis.

The doctor wants to keep me overnight, but I refuse, so they patch me up, prescribe a lot of painkillers and some Valium, and send me on my way.

By the time I hit the exit, three hours later, the sedatives have worn off and the painkillers make walking bearable. I step through the doors, Tom close by my side. I think he’s afraid I might drop at any second, and I’m not sure I won’t.

Then I spot Genesis.

She’s worn and pale and breathtakingly beautiful, still dressed in her psychic reader garb: flowing tiered earth-tone skirt, forest green off-the-shoulder blouse, and all the bangle bracelets that can fit between her wrists and her elbows. Alex and Tom flank her, but I barely notice them, my eyes only for the woman I love more than life.

Three steps, four, and she’s embracing me gently, tentatively, as if she’s afraid I might break. But I’m already broken, and the shudder that passes through me at her touch tells her that.

“It’ll be okay, Flynn. It will,” she whispers.

I don’t want more lies. Lies won’t bring Diego back. “Please,” I tell her, “just take me home.”
